Eligibility:

  • Junior standing
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Successful completion of the prerequisite courses with a grade of “B” or better

Why Consider This Pathway?:

  • Head Start: Allows students to begin graduate work early.
  • Advanced Exploration: Opens doors to advanced technical topics.
  • Accelerated Pathway: Potentially reduces overall time to complete an M.Eng. degree.

Key Policies:

  • No Double-Counting: Approved courses cannot count toward B.S. degree requirements (courses are for graduate credit only).
  • Grade Requirements: Students must earn a B- or higher for the coursework to later apply to an eligible M.Eng. program.
  • Inclusion Credit Policy: Coursework from the University of Maryland must have been taken within five years of the award of a University of Maryland degree for which the student is currently enrolled. Courses older than five years at the time the degree is awarded must be revalidated (this is an exception request that goes through the department AND the Graduate School. Approval can not be guaranteed.)
  • Tuition Structure:
  • On-Campus Sections: Charged at the regular undergraduate tuition rate.
  • Online (MAGE-affiliated sections): Charged at the MAGE online tuition rate.
  • Notes for students studying on an F1 visa: Only one online course per semester may be counted toward full-time status. A graduate-credit-only course may not be the only course taken in the final semester of study.
  • Students still must apply for and be accepted to a graduate program at UMD separately of this process. Completing courses for graduate credit does not guarantee admission.

Next Steps:

  • Initial Advising: Please reach out to your undergraduate academic advisor to review the Graduate Credit Permission process and discuss course selection and planning
  • MAGE Eligibility Review: Please email mage-advising@umd.edu your desired course(s) and a copy of your unofficial transcript for review
  • If you need help aligning these courses with a future M.Eng. degree, please reach out directly to mage-advising@umd.edu for course selection assistance.
  • MAGE Approval: If eligible, the MAGE department will grant course permission and sign the Graduate Departmental Certification portion of the Graduate Credit Permission Form.
  • Undergraduate Sign-Off: The student must then obtain the signature of their Undergraduate Department.
  • Submission: The student is responsible for emailing the completed form to the Graduate School gradschool@umd.edu and CC’ing mage-advising@umd.edu.

*If interested in taking MAGE graduate courses to fulfill your bachelor’s degree requirements, please follow steps 1 and 2 above. Please note that any graduate course used to satisfy bachelor's degree requirements cannot later be applied toward a future graduate degree.

B.S./M.Eng. Pathways

Another pathway to explore: Check out the Combined B.S./M.Eng. Pathways

These pathway options allow eligible UMD undergraduate students to begin taking graduate-level coursework while completing their bachelor’s degree and to use that coursework towards both their bachelor’s and master of engineering degrees, creating a more streamlined transition into a Master of Engineering program. Check out if your undergraduate major has an available B.S./M.Eng. option
