Application Requirements for International Applicants:

In addition to the required materials to apply to the Professional Graduate Engineering programs, the admissions committee will also consider the following factors for all international applicants:

Application Requirements:

English Language Proficiency

  • The English language proficiency exams and score ranges are established by UMD’s Graduate School and can be reviewed on
their website. Exempted countries are also listed on that page.
  • Score requirements for consideration to a Professional Graduate Engineering program:
    • Applying to all on-campus programs: must submit English proficiency scores that meet requirements for at least the English Bridge Program.
    • Applying to all online programs: must submit English proficiency scores that meet the requirements for Full Admission.
    • Applying to all programs: those eligible for the Intensive English Program will not be considered for the M.Eng. or GCEN programs.
  • Scores must meet overall and individual subject requirements to be considered in the range established by the Graduate School.
  • Official score reports must be received and processed by the Graduate School prior to being considered for admission. See MAGE’sAfter You Apply page for information on supporting document deadlines.

International Transcripts

  • MAGE does not accept or consider third party transcript evaluations.
  • Unofficial transcripts and degree certificates for any completed international degree must be uploaded to the application portal.
  • If your transcript and degree certificate was issued in a different language, you must also include a literal English translation.
  • Only admitted students who choose to enroll will be required to submit official transcripts and final degree certificates to the Graduate School.

Additional Information for Applying

  • Apply as an international student if you are a non-U.S. citizen or if you are a non-permanent U.S. resident.
  • International applicants who will require a student visa must submit an application by the On-Campus International application deadline regardless of whether they are in or out of the country.
  • International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is a valuable resource of information and assistance for prospective and current international students. International applicants are encouraged to explore the services they offer, and to contact them with related questions, especially those pertaining to student visas.
  • All applicants, including international students, must meet the admission requirements for each program to be considered for admission. These can be reviewed on the individual program pages.
  • MAGE welcomes international students to apply to an on campus or online Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program (30 credits)
  • Due to the brief nature of the Graduate Certificate in Engineering (GCEN) (12 credits), the program is not available to international students on campus, as they would not qualify for a student visa.
  • International students are welcome to apply to GCEN programs that are offered online to be completed remotely.
  • Remember to use your full legal name as it appears on your passport in your application and on all supporting documents.
  • Be sure to provide a foreign street address—not a P.O. Box—as your permanent home address so we can issue the necessary immigration documents if you are admitted.
