Four University of Maryland students work together on their laptops in the Leidos Lab in Clark HallGet a head start on graduate education through Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering’s accelerated B.S./M.Eng. pathway programs.

These pathway options allow eligible UMD undergraduate students to begin taking graduate-level coursework while completing their bachelor’s degree and to use that coursework towards both their bachelor’s and master of engineering degrees, creating a more streamlined transition into a Master of Engineering program.

Benefits of a Combined B.S./M.Eng.:

  • Start sooner, finish faster
    • Students may take up to three courses (up to 10 credits) during undergraduate study that are then also counted towards their graduate degree
    • MAGE admits in fall, spring, and summer allowing for a seamless transition and quicker path into the M.Eng. program
    • Students are generally able to complete both degrees in approximately five to five and a half years
  • Learn skills today that you can apply tomorrow
    • Earn a coursework-based, practice-oriented Master of Engineering degree centered on real-world applications
    • Develop technical and professional skills and advance directly into engineering careers in industry

Make sure you meet the requirements, follow the steps to apply, and find out more:

General Requirements:

  • Undergraduate Cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher
  • Those admitted to a combined degree program must begin their graduate program the semester following their B.S. graduation.

How to Apply:

  • Undergraduate students apply directly through their own BS department for any and all B.S./M.Eng. programs associated with their undergraduate major (regardless of M.Eng. subject area). Please see the links to each department’s application page in the B.S./M.Eng. program options area above for specific information on timing of your application, additional programmatic requirements, and application information.

What if I have a B.S. in an Engineering field not listed above?

  • If an official B.S./M.Eng. pathway does not yet exist for your Engineering B.S. degree, but you're interested in exploring alternative options to take MAGE coursework while still an undergraduate student, please consult with your undergraduate advisor regarding your ability to take graduate level courses. Please note students can consider taking graduate level courses for graduate credit only through the Graduate Credit Permission Form process. If interested in taking MAGE coursework, please email mage-advising@umd.edu for additional guidance and course planning support. If interested in learning more about the Master of Engineering degree or Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering (MAGE) in general, please contact mage@umd.edu.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each B.S./M.En.g program has specific graduate level courses that are approved to be double counted. Students should meet with their Undergraduate Advisor to discuss specific courses and how they will count towards their undergraduate B.S. degree. Students can also see the Master of Engineering degree plans to see how the approved courses fit into their graduate curriculum.

Undergraduate students taking ENPM, ENAI, or departmental classes in an on-campus section will be charged their regular undergraduate tuition rate. Undergraduate students taking ENPM, ENAI OR departmental classes with MAGE-affiliated online sections will be charged the MAGE online tuition.

B.S./M.Eng. students DO still need to apply to the program using the Graduate School’s online application system by the appropriate deadline for the semester they would like to matriculate into graduate studies.

  • Students are required to submit unofficial transcripts from the University of Maryland, a personal statement and one letter of recommendation. All Clark graduates are also granted an application fee waiver.

We are not able to guarantee admission since the final admission review and decision is from the Graduate School, however if all B.S./M.Eng. requirements are met by the student we can guarantee MAGE support for their graduate application.

MAGE accepts applications for Summer, Fall, AND Spring, so students can plan for continuous enrollment if that fits their timeframe. Please see application deadlines

Please note the following Graduate School policy
"Students admitted to a combined Bachelor’s-Master’s Program may not defer the start of their Master’s program, but may request a Leave of Absence in their first year in the Master's program. Students who do not begin their Master’s program the term after completing their Bachelor’s degree will have the double-counted credits converted to being counted only for the Bachelor’s degree."

The M.Eng. degree requirement is a total of 10 courses (30 credits). As a part of the Combined BS/MEng program, if a student is able to take the maximum 3 graduate level courses during their undergraduate coursework, they will then have 7 courses remaining to complete their M.Eng. degree. Students can opt to take the remaining courses either full-time or part-time each semester to finish their degree. Please note: at the graduate-level full time is considered 9 or more credits (3 or more classes) and part-time is 1-8 credits (1 or 2 classes).

Stephanie Elcock, our Program Manager for Academic Advising serves as our M.Eng. students’ primary advisor during their time in our program. She will assist them in degree planning and creating a timeline towards degree completion. If students would like to explore this further prior to M.Eng. matriculation, they are welcome to reach out to mage-advising@umd.edu with questions.

Yes, many departments also have B.S./M.S. pathways available. These pathways are more research-focused and are generally intended for students who may want to pursue a Ph.D. and/or a career either in research or academia. More information can be found under Undergraduate Degrees on each department’s website.
