After earning undergraduate degrees in engineering and psychology and teaching on the secondary level, Dr. Caton earned his doctorate from Stanford University in 2005 with a focus in advanced engine combustion and joined the faculty of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. Dr. Caton has been actively involved in Navy research programs focused on alternative fuels for energy systems, including biologically-based and synthetic fuels. Dr. Caton has also published research in the areas of alternative energy systems and waste-to-energy conversion. Dr. Caton is the two-time recipient of the USNA Pi Tau Sigma teaching award and the Apgar Award for teaching excellence and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Maryland.
